How many calories does cycling burn?

Cycling is one of the most effective activities for burning energy while being easy on the joints. Energy expenditure depends mainly on three factors: intensity, duration and your weight. Our calculator uses established MET (metabolic equivalent) values to estimate the calories burned.

Eating well around your effort

Knowing your energy expenditure helps you plan your nutrition: on a ride longer than 90 minutes, you often need to top up on carbs during the effort. Check out our nutrition and hydration chapter for strategies based on distance.

  • Leisure (< 16 km/h): ~4 MET — ideal for active recovery.
  • Moderate (16-19 km/h): ~6.8 MET — the pace of most rides.
  • Hard to racing (> 22 km/h): 10-12 MET — intense training.

Frequently asked questions

Does cycling help you lose weight?
Yes, when combined with a balanced diet. Cycling burns 400 to 800 kcal per hour depending on intensity, while protecting the joints. Consistency (3-4 rides a week) matters more than intensity for lasting weight loss.
Does the calculation account for elevation and wind?
Our estimate is based on average intensity via MET values. Elevation and wind increase actual expenditure: a hilly ride can burn 15-25% more than a flat route at the same speed.
How many calories for a 100 km ride?
A 100 km ride at a moderate pace (≈ 4 h) burns roughly 2,000 to 2,800 kcal for a 75 kg rider. That's why it's important to eat regularly during the effort to avoid bonking.
