What size bike should you choose?

Choosing the right frame size is essential for comfort, efficiency and injury prevention. A bike that's too big or too small causes back, knee and neck pain. Our calculator estimates your ideal frame size from your height and inseam, and suggests a starting saddle height.

Height or inseam?

Your height gives the approximate frame size; your inseam fine-tunes the saddle height. The LeMond method, used by our tool, multiplies your inseam by 0.883 to get a starting saddle height (from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle).

  • Road bike: sizes in centimetres (47 to 63 cm).
  • Mountain bike: sizes in inches (XS to XXL).
  • Hybrid / city: sizes S, M, L depending on the brand.

Since geometry varies a lot from one brand to another, always test ride the bike and get expert advice. To get started right, read our complete buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my inseam for a bike?
Stand barefoot with your back to the wall and feet about 15 cm apart. Place a book between your legs like a saddle and measure from the floor to the top of the book. That's your inseam length.
What is the ideal saddle height?
A good approximation is inseam (cm) × 0.883, measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle. Then adjust by a few millimetres until your leg is nearly straight with your heel on the pedal at the bottom of the stroke.
What should I do if I'm between two sizes?
If you're torn between two sizes, choose the smaller one for sharper, sportier handling, or the larger one for more comfort and stability on long rides. The stem and seatpost let you fine-tune the fit.
